Use of Media in Promoting Policy Change

Policies provide guiding principles and are what shape societies, organizations, and governments in the current world. When it comes to healthcare policy, media plays a huge role by helping professional organizations communicate with the public as well as influencing policy decisions. Media platforms provide new avenues for these organizations to promote their health policy agendas and advocate for change. The World Health Organization (WHO) is a good example of an organization that has used media platforms to promote health initiatives, create awareness, and share health challenges. For instance, WHO has used media platforms, including televisions, radios, newspapers, and social media platforms, to spread information on how to prevent the spread or acquisition of various diseases such as coronavirus, Ebola, Cholera, and other infectious diseases. Using these media platforms, the World Health Organization reaches healthcare professionals and other individuals worldwide, hence saving many lives by preventing the spread of diseases, promoting healthy behaviour, and educating the public (Valencia, 2014). However, the WHO should consider solving the challenge of addressing diverse cultures and perspectives worldwide. The organization can consider partnering with local organizations and stakeholders to ensure that its media campaigns are culturally sensitive, as literature shows that cultural competency can improve health outcomes (Truong et al., 2014). Lastly, the WHO should ensure easier access to information and clarity as well through the use of media. Some information it provides can be challenging for people to understand and apply. Therefore, the WHO should consider the use of the media to provide visual aids like photos or videos and user-friendly materials to enhance better understanding. In conclusion, the WHO has used media to spread health information and create awareness. However, the World Health Organization should consider cultural sensitivity and ensure easy accessibility of information.
