During a physical exam, if I have a parent or a guardian that does not allow their child to answer any of the questions asked, I will approach them in a respectful manner. As nurses our duties are to our patients. We need to clarify with the parents on how important it is to obtain information from the patient. This information is important as it can determine the treatment plan. If I am having difficulty obtaining information, I can take the patient to another room to perform a test such as a hearing test and ask them questions there. In addition, I would alert the provider and seek further guidance. This situation affects confidentiality. We should be able to have a conversation with the patient alone. “Confidential care for adolescents is important because it encourages access to care and increases discussions about sensitive topics and behaviors that may substantially affect their health and well-being” (“Confidentiality,” 2020, p. 171). We want pediatric patients to feel that they can approach healthcare professionals and feel safe that their information is confidential.
