Choosing a Career
The career I chose to research is Human Resource Management. I selected this career because it aligns with my current career path. I began in retail management and transitioned about 15 years ago into Healthcare Administration. Over time, I advanced to office management and then into Practice Administration. For the past six years, I have served as the Human Resource Director for a large Neurology practice. I am passionate about this field and eager to explore its aspects beyond healthcare, particularly in other industries.
The job I examined on O*Net Online is Human Resources Manager (https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/11-3121.00). A Human Resources Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating human resources activities and staff within an organization.
The technological skills required for this role include proficiency in software related to accounting, human resources, presentations, and time accounting. This position typically requires a bachelor’s degree, which is crucial as it allows for the development of these technology skills during college. Gaining comfort with various software types will better prepare you for this career.
Identify Skills
Some of the key skills necessary to be a Human Resource Manager include active listening, personnel management, effective speaking, decision-making, and reading comprehension. I have honed many of these skills through my work experience and academic journey. I consider my listening skills to be strong, enabling me to give my full attention to individuals or groups and identify key areas needing further discussion or focus. I excel at making decisions, whether under pressure or after careful consideration, and can lead my team without hesitation. However, I feel I need to improve my public speaking skills. Although I frequently speak to groups, I often feel anxious, and my nerves tend to show regardless of how often I engage in public speaking.
I found a job listing on Indeed for a Human Resources Manager position with Boomerang Rubber (https://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Human%20Resources%20manager&l=Dayton%2C%20OH&vjk=836e06de3de3b399&advn=2537406905248409). The technical skills required for this job include knowledge of HR systems and databases. Additionally, the job demands leadership skills, excellent active listening, negotiation and presentation abilities, and the competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company.
The listing appears accurate and mostly error-free. However, I noticed a mistake in the skills section, where “human resources” is misspelled as “humanr resources.” Additionally, there is a contradiction in the qualifications section, where a bachelor’s degree is listed as preferred, but under education, it is stated as required. Despite these issues, the information in the listing is clear and well-organized. The company, Boomerang Rubber, is easily discoverable through a quick Google search.
To qualify for this role, I would need to acquire better knowledge of HR systems and databases, as well as an in-depth understanding of labor law and HR best practices.
