Using the online calculator for this assessment, I found that I had some remaining time, which I allocated to family time since family is the most important aspect of my life. As a national staff member and project manager, I have a highly structured workday, allowing me to easily calculate times by reviewing my calendar. There are days when I get more than eight hours of sleep and days when I get less, which I believe contributed to the initial variance. Overall, I believe my time is well-balanced and productive.
To maintain an organized schedule, I must prioritize tasks and complete them in order. During my leadership training, I learned to categorize tasks using a chart that includes a circle of influence and a circle of control. “Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we end up with a massive list of urgent and important tasks we need to get done. In which case, we need to find a way to dig deeper and find their true importance” (Mackay, 2020). Tasks that I have direct control over are prioritized on one list, while tasks where I only have influence are placed on another. However, even tasks where I have influence may take precedence if they have pressing deadlines. Time management in a corporate setting, in my humble opinion, is a delicate balancing act. “One way of discovering how you really spend your time—including where your bad habits may lie—is to keep a detailed daily activity log for an entire week” (Bailey, 2020). A sample list of my prioritized tasks would be as follows:
1) Ensuring that I am home every night to have dinner with my wife and three children.
2) Project management tasks for the projects I lead at work.
3) Assisting with projects that I am involved in.
4) Completing all my coursework for school in a timely manner (at least one assignment per class each workday).
5) Following my workout plan and diet.
6) Leisure time or vacation with the family.
When prioritizing my tasks, I always place family first whenever possible. Since the retreat ends before dinner, I can make it home. The work projects are more important than the retreat, but all work will be completed during the week. My commitment to the company retreat ranks third. I will still have time in the morning to work out and eat properly. Additionally, I will have time in the evening to complete any coursework due that day. Lastly, before bed, I will have time to read and conduct research for school.
Part 2
My rationale for choosing a time organization strategy is straightforward: time management. Time management is a crucial aspect of my life. As seen in my schedule, my week is busy, so any assistance in staying organized is beneficial. I use Microsoft Outlook because my employees and assistant can access my calendar and find time to meet with me or schedule meetings for others as needed. I personally use a Microsoft app called “To Do” on my phone to add tasks to my schedule when I am away from work or unable to access my calendar. Without time management skills, efficiency and productivity would be unattainable. Therefore, it is essential to have tasks outlined and to adhere to the time limits allocated for each task. I am a firm believer in ending meetings on time to ensure that everyone’s day can proceed as planned.
As a corporate employee, I prioritize keeping my schedule clear for family activities. Therefore, my weekends are usually free, so the retreat did not significantly impact me, and any family plans were rescheduled. I also recognize that the exercise required us to interrupt our weekends, but I have never had a mandatory work retreat, nor would I require my employees to attend a weekend retreat involuntarily. It is important for some to keep their personal schedules updated in their work calendars to adapt and adjust if leadership imposes such requirements.

In my opinion, any resources that help one stay on task and on time are valuable if they are effective. I use Microsoft tools because my team and their employees can access my schedule and update it as needed. This approach also serves as a critical thinking strategy; using an alternative schedule or paper calendar would make it increasingly difficult to stay on task and respond to everyone who needs something from me.
The source I used from the library was credible to me because it reflected the same time management principles that have consistently succeeded in my career. While it was more in-depth than my usual approach, the article from the library was extremely helpful in understanding how to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
