Training Pets to Get Used to One’s Absence

Without a doubt, dogs have been man’s friend for many generations. And I am not an exemption. I find it unbelievable that some people do not love dogs. Dogs are sometimes fierce protectors that can attack anyone they feel is threatening a family. However, in the old days, dogs were not considered companions but seen more as working animals. I like dogs. My dog, Bosco, is a Harlequin Great Dane that outweighs our 10-year-old brother, and to the other dogs in our neighborhood, he must look like a tall spotted monster because they avoid him at all costs. Do you think dogs are smarter than people? I believe so because sometimes our dog seems to know when we are laughing at him because he tucks his head down and appears to shrink into a small ball resembling a lumpy soccer ball. That dog can open the refrigerator and grab a can of soda! Nevertheless, on a beautiful fall day, my family enjoys picnicking at a quiet beach we know that has a blue lagoon surrounded by rustic picnic tables and tall, green pines. The whole family grabs sweaters and corduroys, Mom packs a cheese sandwich picnic basket with all the junk food we never get to taste otherwise, and we jump into Dad’s old blue jalopy and head out for one last day of fun before all the hub-bub of school gets into swing. Also, my brother is a great Jayvee football quarterback. My older red-headed sister is a cheerleader complete with red pom-poms. I play cymbals and drums in the school pep band, so we are usually very tied up in school activities soon after school starts. Furthermore, I really enjoy the pep band; it’s fun to get all dressed up in my red band uniform and beat those shiny drums during a game. However, Our big dog needs to stay at home with the cat because he attracts sand and fleas. Leaving the dog at home while I go out makes me feel sad at times. Consequently, I learned that to make the feeling of separation bearable, I had to start by encouraging the dog to go to their sleeping place and be there with him as he stayed on the bed. Then I would reward him for being quiet on the bed. Later, I would make him stay while I move away and provide my reward upon my return. I would proceed with this routine, all the while moving away and also for extended periods of time. Therefore, the distance and the time length that one increases on the event will often depend on the dog. With this notion in mind, should the dog move, it is essential that, at this point, one does not punish or reward them. Rather, one should go back to the previous stage.  (“Teach Your Dog It’s OK To Be Left Alone | RSPCA,” 2021). More so, the training should progress by leaving the room before coming back. When one reaches a period when the dog has no problem being left for more than an hour, one should thus have the confidence to leave the pet for extended periods. Inasmuch as some dogs could not have a problem with being left alone for a short period, others could be distressed after being separated from their owners. A study posits that about half of dogs negatively react when left by themselves during daytime or for a given time. Despite the common belief that dogs behave in this way to exact revenge on their owners for leaving them behind, they do this because of the distress. Other dogs are seen barking, displaying destructive behavior, or howling to beat off the distress they feel. With this notion in mind, it is often difficult to know if they have been in distress unless you receive a visit from the neighbor telling you how the dog has been barking away for the better part of the day. In this case, one must install cameras in the house to check for signs of distress from the animal, such as pacing about, trembling, or whining. Separation-related behavior is one of the most common reasons for animals to be handed to animal rescue organizations. Given that I love Bosco, I would not risk losing him to the Animal protection people. Bosco is a good dog. For a long time, I trained him to get accustomed to being alone for a part of the day. It seems he realizes that sometimes, he would have to be alone. After being a part of the family for a long time, Bosco knows even the exact time to expect us. A neighbor once quipped that one could only tell that Bosco was around if he barked around early evening, a time when he knows it is our time to be back.
