Performance-driven teams differ from regular working teams. They have common goals, roles and purposes that guide their activities. Both long-term and short-term goals are well articulated (Nursing Leadership & Management: Leading and Serving, 2018). To achieve these goals, the teams are committed to the work as well as each other. The goals and mission are connected to each member’s role. Communication among the team members promotes honesty and openness. As a result, this leads to high performance because the team members have access to all information. Conflict management and problem-solving occur rapidly in such a team. The leaders in these teams ensure that members collaborate by providing such opportunities as well as those that foster development and growth (SHRM, 2022).

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation and Their Relevance in Team Performance

Intrinsic motivation is acquired or achieved through abstract aspects. The participants carry out certain tasks because they find them rewarding. For instance, the team members can be recognized for their efforts toward a particular project. This recognition boosts their motivation because they feel valued. Extrinsic motivation compels individuals to carry out a certain activity to attract a reward or avoid a punishment. It is driven by external aspects that can be observed (Sennett, 2021). For instance, meeting the project deadline could attract bonuses, leading a team to work towards that goal.

When dealing with a team, it is crucial to use both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation to drive behaviors. Understanding the difference between the two types of motivation enables a team leader to utilize the different motivations beneficially and strategically. Different team members are motivated by varying elements. Thus, choosing different elements to motivate internally or externally will directly affect the team’s performance.
