A description of your core values. Leadership is best described as a multidimensional profession that integrated several perspectives personal aspects, such as values, team work and team building and the ability to problem solve. In the past, I have been in a leadership position and understand that the position is not something that can be learned. Leadership is a series of trial and tribulations in order to find the perfect balance that works for both you and your team. My core values as a nurse and a leader have always paralleled transformational and authentic leadership theories and include: empathy, transparency, accountability, communication, motivation and flexibility. Marshall and Broome (2017) state that authentic nurse leaders can be described as authentic and transparent individuals that possess personal truthfulness and traits of compassion, ethical beliefs, and shared decision making. (Marshall & Broome, 2017). As a leader, I always felt that it was important to be open and honest with my coworkers regarding changes that were occurring on the units. Needless to say, seasoned nurses had a difficult time adjusting to best practices that were being employed. To ease tension, I provided research, trainings and listened to concerns my coworkers had regarding the changes. While there wasn’t much that could have been done, validating their feelings seemed to decrease anxiety surrounding the changes.
