According to the International Institute of Minnesota.org (n.d.), approximately 200,000 Liberians are found in the United States of America. Notably, about 35,000 Liberians are found in the state of Minnesota (International Institute of Minnesota.org, n.d.). The majority of this population is located in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center (International Institute of Minnesota.org, n.d.). This paper evaluates the community resources for Liberians in Brooklyn Park, identifies the priority nursing diagnosis, and develops an intervention for the nursing diagnosis.
Community Resources
The Organization of Liberians in Minnesota is an example of a community resource found in Hennepin, Minnesota. The organization became operational in 1979 (OLMN.org, 2020). It plays a significant role in promoting the welfare of immigrants in Minnesota. The scope of services offered includes healthcare, education, proper housing, and employment (OLMN.org, 2020). As such, the organization identifies and addresses the critical issues Liberians living in Hennepin, Minnesota face. Notably, the Organization of Liberians ensures that cultural congruence is upheld by educating the public and other institutions about the culture and beliefs of Liberians (OLMN.org, 2020).
The Organization of Liberians offers affordable and proper housing services to the Liberian communities in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Accordingly, these resources help to address my nursing diagnosis. Availing of adequate housing services promotes the well-being of Liberians and helps to avert homelessness-related conditions (OLMN.org, 2020). These conditions include risk-prone health behaviours, insomnia due to sleep disturbances, and desperation (The Queens Nursing Institute.org, n.d.).
Priority Diagnosis
The priority nursing diagnosis is risk-prone health behaviours. The lack of adequate and affordable housing causes homelessness among Liberian communities in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Homelessness is associated with risk-prone health behaviours that are characterized by limited access to healthcare services, lack of proper nutrition, lack of social support, and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression (The Queens Nursing Institute.org, n.d.). Risk-prone health behaviours increase morbidity and mortality rates among the target population (The Queens Nursing Institute.org, n.d.). As such, prompt measures should be taken to address risk-prone health behaviours.
Moreover, adequate interventions should be formulated to mitigate risk-prone health behaviours. The goal for change is to make adequate and affordable housing available to reduce the incidence of homelessness (The Queens Nursing Institute.org, n.d.). Additionally, change should be directed at availing of affordable healthcare services and nutritional services. These goals will help to reduce risk-prone health behaviours. By so doing, morbidity and mortality rates among the target population will decrease.
The Solution to the Nursing Diagnosis
A multidisciplinary approach is required to address risk-prone health behaviours. The first intervention entails collaborating with various organizations and policymakers to address the problem of homelessness and limited access to care (The Queens Nursing Institute.org, n.d.). Nurses should work with organizations such as the Organization of Liberians in Minnesota (OLM) to ensure adequate housing and healthcare services are provided to the target population. OLM offers services such as housing, nutrition, and healthcare that benefit the target population (OLMN.org, 2020). Formulating policies that increase access to healthcare services by immigrants benefits the target population. One such policy is the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act (Jayapal.house.gov, 2021). The second intervention is collaborating with relevant stakeholders to train the healthcare workforce on the needs of the target population. Training equips healthcare providers with pertinent skills and knowledge to address various healthcare problems, including providing mental health services.
Health Education
Health education for the target population entails strategies to cope with mental health issues and information on adequate nutrition. Homelessness among the target population increases the risk of mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and hopelessness (da Silva et al., 2018). These risk-prone health behaviours impact the target population negatively. Education programs should target coping techniques. Notably, non-pharmacological approaches should be embraced.
