Evidenced Based Practice-The evolution of EBP and how Barriers to EBP
Evidenced Practice (EBP) is a method of providing medical care that involves combining the results of the most recent scientific studies with the knowledge and experience of healthcare professionals and the patients themselves. EBP aims to improve patient outcomes and the quality of healthcare delivered (Li et al., 2019). The Cochrane Collaboration, a global network of evidence-based practice centres, launched the evolution of EBP in the early 1990s. Since then, there has been an increase in the number of evidence-based practice resources available to healthcare providers, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and patient education materials.
Barriers to EBP can be overcome by developing a culture of evidence-based practice within healthcare institutions. This necessitates the development of an organizational structure and culture that promotes evidence-based practice and provides resources and training to clinicians (Sharplin et al., 2019). In addition, healthcare organizations should encourage clinicians to raise clinical questions and seek evidence-based answers.
A compelling clinical question that piques my interest is, “What is the best way to prevent the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection in hospitalized patients?” This is an essential subject since Clostridioides difficile infection is a significant cause of morbidity and death in hospitalized patients. To answer this question, I would conduct a systematic review of the literature to identify studies that compare the effectiveness of different interventions to prevent the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection. I would also consider the cost-effectiveness of each intervention and the patient’s preferences and values.
In conclusion, EBP is a method of providing medical treatment that takes into account both the current state of knowledge and the values and preferences of individual patients. Barriers to EBP can be overcome by creating a culture of evidence-based practice and providing resources and training to clinicians. A compelling clinical question that piques my interest is, “What is the best way to prevent the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection in hospitalized patients?”
