Ethics In A Nursing Program And In Practice Compare and examine the consequences of unethical behaviors in a nursing Master’s program and in the nursing practice by providing one example for each.

Nursing Ethics

Nurses play an important role in the promotion of the optimum outcomes for their populations. They utilize evidence-based interventions with the aim of achieving care outcomes that include safety, quality, and efficiency. Nursing ethics guide the decisions that nurses make in undertaking these roles. In addition, the provisions by organizations such as the American Nurses Association inform the care interventions by nurses in their practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine what nursing ethics is and provisions by the American Nurses’ Association that guides my practice as a registered nurse.

Nursing Ethics

Ethics are what inform nursing practice. They are universal rules that guide nurses’ conduct and act as the basis for identifying the intentions, motives, and actions that are valued or important for nurses, their populations and practice. Ethics also relates to the right and wrong actions in nursing practice and encompasses the processes that nurses utilize to determine the consequences of their decisions. Nursing ethics also help nurses to address dilemmas and make informed judgments on how to optimize outcomes in the process (Haddad & Geiger, 2022). Nurses apply ethics in different situations such as addressing health disparities, social determinants of health, and advocate for social justice for the vulnerable.

Provision Guidance

The American Nurses’ Association has developed provisions that guide nursing practice. Provision 1 is among the provisions that will affect my practice. The provision requires nurses to practice with respect and compassion for the inherent worth, dignity, and unit attributes that each person possess. There are several ways in which this provision will guide my practice. First, I will accord all my patients, their significant others, and colleagues the respect they deserve. I will uphold the patient’s autonomy in making decisions on issues that affect them. I will also establish relationships based on honesty, respect, and trust with my patients. I will also respect the patients’ right to self-determination. In this case, I will respect the diversity, values, beliefs, and preferences of my patients. I will uphold professionalism when interacting with colleagues (Nursingworld.org, n.d.). This includes collaborating and providing care within my scope of practice and providing professional insights about how to improve care outcomes for my patients.

Provision 3 of American Nurses’ Association will also guide my practice. The provision requires that nurses promotes, protects, and advocates for patients’ rights, safety, and health. Nurses are mainly involved in ensuring the adoption of decisions that protect the needs and rights of their patients. They advocate the use of best practice interventions with the aim of achieving outcomes such as safety, quality, and efficiency. The other role as an advocate entails patient education. I will educate my patients and the diverse populations about their health needs, rights, and how to achieve their health outcomes. Health education empowers populations to take responsibility for their health. I will also uphold the patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality in the use of their data (Nursingworld.org, n.d.). Nurses engage in research to influence their practice. I doing so, I will ensure I adhere to the ethics of nursing research such as informed consent, privacy, and confidentiality.

Conclusion

In summary, ethics is important in nursing practice. They guide the decisions that nurses make in handling different situations they experience in their practice. Provisions 1 and 3 will guide my practice as a nurse. I will strive to develop the competencies that I need to enhance care outcomes for the populations that I serve.
