Humanity’s quest for technological advancement has always been a constant, progressive
process. Our current technology is extremely advanced and continues to progress. Humans
depend on technology in everyday life and act as if it’s a basic life necessity. Technology is
intended and applicable to enhance the life of the human species. However, the dependency for
technology and future advancement is damaging to human nature. More specifically, the recent
mass appeal and popular use of today’s smartphones is very alarming. Most people alive today
use smartphones in part of their everyday life. Sometimes it seems like people are more in touch
with their phone than with reality. It’s important that all smartphone users understand both the
awesome powers and the potential risks that come with using a smartphone. Although I do own
and love my iPhone, it’s apparent that negative and dumbing qualities can be inherited from
smartphone use. Heavy smartphone use not only distorts ones perception of reality but can also
cause negative effects on one’s physical, emotional, and social health.
Since the start of existence, humanity has shown exponential progression of knowledge
and understanding of the world and its resources. It’s in our human nature to constantly crave
knowledge and understanding to improve humanity’s quality of life. Humanity has invented
numerous technologies that are used for practical, convenient, necessary and/or personal pleasure
purposes. Technology has become very prevalent in society. For example, medical advancements
have given humanity the capability to lower mortality rates, fight illnesses and increase our
overall lifespan. An online article from www.healthdata.org reports ,“Between 1990 and 2013,
life expectancy at birth increased from 57.3 years to 64.2 years for males and from 58.2 years to
68.5 years for females”(www.healthdata.org). This is a prime example of how technological
progression has positively impacted/changed practical and necessary properties of human life
