How Health Policy Influenced the Planning and Implementation of my Capstone Project, and Contributions the Project Made to Policy Development Throughout this project, I reviewed different healthcare policies that would impact on my nursing practice. Healthcare policies inform any plans, decisions made or actions taken to solve healthcare problems and provide patients with high standards of care (Mileski et al., 2017). The American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Healthcare Portability and Transparency Act (HIPAA), Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Affordable Care Act were all useful in the development and implementation of the project. Primarily, I used the American Nurses Association Standards of Practice to guide the implementation process while ensuring adherence to the ethical codes specific to this problem. With the use of technology to access the patients' healthcare information, I found the HIPAA guidelines necessary to ensure that confidentiality was maintained, the patient information secured and patient safety improved (Brent, 2018). Moreover, as some patients were unable to afford their medications, the ACA and Medicare and Medicaid Services policies were useful in ensuring no patient failed to comply to their medication due to unaffordable healthcare costs
