Is the theory congruent with current nursing interventions or therapeutics?

Henderson’s Need Theory is utilized still today in nursing to properly evaluate the patient’s individualized needs. “Meeting the goal of achieving the fourteen needs of the client can be a great basis to further improve one’s performance toward nursing care” (Vera, 2014,). Henderson’s fourteen components of basic human needs help the nurse to formulate a patient-specific care plan. Many nurses today use Henderson’s theory without even knowing they are. Every nurse must evaluate their patient’s activities of daily living (fourteen components of basic human needs) and formulate a care plan to promote health and independence.

Virginia Henderson’s definition and Need Theory is a huge strength for nurses today. The nurse today whether it be a medical-surgical, emergency room, pediatric, or surgical nurse all utilize Henderson’s theory to evaluate each patient’s individualized needs. Without the work from Henderson, who knows what we would use today to evaluate the patient.
