NURS-FPX 8010 Executive Leadership in Contemporary Nursing Strategic Plan Evaluation in Healthcare: A Critical Appraisal of the VA’s Approach

The desired state is to have 5% or fewer skin cancer patients, compared to the current state of 7%. This reveals a gap of 2%. Contributing factors, as identified by a survey, include untrained staff and lack of knowledge among patients. The West Virginia University hospital can play a crucial role in decreasing the mortality rate.

    Problem Statement

The problem is the increasing number of skin cancer cases in the local population of West Virginia University Hospital. This issue is adversely affecting the health quality of patients, leading to a higher number of deaths.

    AIM Statement

The aim is to reduce the death rate of skin cancer patients at the West Virginia University hospital. The program will target both patients suffering from skin cancer and those at risk of developing the disease. Prevention strategies will be implemented, staff will be trained, and patient education will be enhanced. This change will occur in the Oncology department of the hospital over a timeline of one year. The initiative is expected to bring quality care from healthcare staff and increase the population’s life span.

    Planned Intervention

The proposed intervention includes training staff, identifying barriers, and guiding patients. This will involve:

    • Training West Virginia University Hospital staff through educational seminars.
    • Educating patients on body coverage, sunscreen usage, and wearing ultraviolet-resistant glasses.
    • Implementing processes involving healthcare organizations, stakeholders, and policymakers.
    • Initiating staff work post-training.
    • Expected effects include benefits to the targeted population, reduced disease risk, increased patient life expectancy, and enhanced educational seminars for cancer prevention.
