Nurses’ Role In Caring For A Patient Who Suffers From This Disorder
The nurse should:
Monitor the vital signs and check for any signs of complication like a thyroid storm in hyperthyroidism, also known as thyrotoxicosis- an abrupt worsening of the condition due to an infection or stress.
Weigh the patient on a daily basis and ensure the nutritional needs of the patient are met. For example, instructing a patient with hypothyroidism to consume a low-calorie diet.
Administer the prescribed medication to the patient, like levothyroxine sodium (Synthroid) in hypothyroidism (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2021) and propylthiouracil (Propacil, PTU) in hyperthyroidism.
Monitor for signs of overdosage or under dosage.
Help the patient manage the symptoms. For example, providing a warm environment for the patient.
Provide emotional support to the patient.
Response Evaluation To The Interventions
No signs of overdosing or underdosing noted
No signs of complications
Responding to medication, therefore, no symptoms
The patient adheres to the plan of care
