Orem's Self-care Deficit Nursing Theory
Dorothea Orem worked as an operating room nurse, private duty nurse, pediatric and adult medical and surgical units, emergency room overnight supervisor, and biological science technician in her early career. Her vast experience in the healthcare field made her develop Orem's theory based on three parts. They are the theory of self-care, self-care deficit, and the nursing system. The purpose of nursing theories is to provide a framework for connecting nursing practice. Dorothy Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Dorothy Orem has vast ideas developed to enhance nursing practice and education. This paper will examine self-care deficit nursing theory in nursing practice by reflecting on a few peer-reviewed journal articles.
