The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity complements writing. It determines how the writer expresses themselves and how the readers perceive what has been written. Academic integrity develops through honesty, trustfulness, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage(Holden et al., 2021). These values ensure that the professionals within that academic field take responsibility for the works they develop and submit to their academic bodies and institutions. Writing with integrity means the writer avoids incidents of academic dishonesty, such as plagiarizing other authors’ works and cheating in their writing.
There exists a significant relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. Professional practices and literary ethics complement each other. Professional practice determines conduct, while literary ethics choose adherence to academic integrity during learning, study, and research. Tracing literary ethics helps an individual develop excellent professional skills (de Graaf, 2019). In addition, adhering to academic ethics during study or research can help build understanding and compliance with the rules, code of ethics, and standards of practice within your chosen profession.
Some various tools and practices contribute to academic integrity. Paraphrasing when writing is practiced and can improve the integrity of your work. Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
Maintaining integrity in academic work requires understanding the drivers of committing academic dishonesty in the first place. According to Jose (2022), students are more likely to achieve academic dishonesty if they lack enough time to study, do not understand study materials, procrastinate a lot, lack healthy study habits, have self-esteem issues, and want to get better marks than they are capable of. As an MSN program student, integrity in academic work can be maintained by always attending classes and ensuring I understand what has been taught. Comprehension of study materials includes asking the lecturers to clarify parts poorly understood. Another strategy is following instructions or requesting clarification during studies or examinations. It is also essential to consistently deliver work and avoid plagiarizing content.
On the other hand, integrity in professional work as a nurse can be achieved by continuously engaging in learning. Continuous learning helps nurses understand a diverse workplace’s complexities and quickly adapt to complex work environments (Moafimadani et al., 2020). Continuous learning also helps nurses understand the dynamic changes in an ever-changing work environment, the factors contributing to such change, and how to manage them. Therefore, despite the changes and pressures related to change, nurses can maintain their integrity and professionalism by continuously investing in learning and personal and professional development.
There are various resources and approaches to use as an MSN program student and in professional practice as a nurse to maintain integrity. The student or nurse can use technology to research best practices to improve integrity and gain deeper insights into how to comprehend learning materials. Another approach is reviewing the existing code of ethics and conduct to understand what’s expected ethically as a student or nurse.
