Introduction

The rise of technology and the cyber realm has introduced numerous challenges across education, organizations, government, and various industries. Human errors and insufficient training often inadvertently foster cybercrime. Researchers have suggested strategies to mitigate cybersecurity vulnerabilities through serious gamification and the formation of positive habits. This study aims to investigate and present the effects of cybersecurity on the general population, focusing on the human aspects involved. By addressing these challenges and enhancing strategies through serious cybersecurity games and habit formation, we can contribute to a safer cyber environment.

Research Question

Qualitative research on cybersecurity awareness among high school students:

  • Are high school students aware of cybercrime?- How risky is it for students to keep their devices logged in?- What motivates them to log off and turn off devices after each use?- Would they be interested in participating in cybersecurity drills at school?- Control question: What non-cybersecurity behaviors do they practice, such as locking their car after parking? Methods, Procedures, and Techniques

a) Methods: An e-survey will be conducted using both closed and open-ended questions to assess cybersecurity knowledge, the risks associated with logged-in devices, and attitudes towards cybersecurity practices. Ethical approval and permission from school administration will be obtained.

b) Data Collection: Responses will be gathered and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis.

c) Methodology Choice: Online surveys are efficient, straightforward, cost-effective, and capable of reaching large sample sizes.

d) Advantages: Open-ended questions yield subjective data, and the survey is designed to be concise and easy to understand.

e) Disadvantages: Limitations include the inability to conduct interviews, challenges in verifying participant authenticity, reliance on email responses, and potential difficulties in accurately interpreting subjective responses from high school students.

Sample

a) Population of Interest: High school students.

b) Sample Participants: 2,384 students in Grades 9 to 12 at Westview High School.

c) The sample encompasses high school students of all genders, races, ethnicities, and religions, including those who are proficient in reading and writing in English.

Procedures

a) Participant Recruitment: Email invitations will be sent through the school administration.

b) Study Procedures: Participants will receive an email containing a survey link, followed by informed consent. The survey will be conducted online using school devices.

Benefits

This study will enhance our understanding of high school students’ awareness and behaviors regarding cybersecurity. It will aid in the development of effective cybersecurity training programs for adolescents, highlighting the necessity for cybersecurity education within schools.
