Role of Outcomes in Evaluating Practice Change Through Research

Researchers should evaluate the impact of outcomes of their evidence-based practice (EBP). The evaluation of outcomes offers numerous benefits. To begin with, it enables the researcher to ascertain whether the EBP has fulfilled its goals and objectives as planned (Mypeer.org, n.d.). In this context, the outcomes should be harmonious with the initial plan. Furthermore, outcome evaluation enables the researcher to determine the interventions of the EBP that work and those that do not work (CDC.gov, n.d.). This forms the basis of modifying the EBP to incorporate interventions associated with optimal outcomes. Also, outcome evaluation enables the researcher to evaluate the EBP’s value for money (CDC.gov, n.d.). In this context, the benefits of the outcomes are evaluated and compared with the resources used to implement the EBP.

I will evaluate the roles of outcomes by assessing the impact of the intervention on the target population. CDC.gov (n.d.) reports that outcome evaluation is based on the objectives and focuses on the extent to which a program affects the behavior of the target population. Regarding my capstone project, my target population is patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Firstly, I will evaluate the impact of the outcomes on stratifying patients based on their risk of developing venous thromboembolism. Secondly, I will evaluate the impact of the outcome on reducing the incidences of venous thromboembolisms among patients in the ICU. Evaluation of the impact of the project on the target population will provide key feedback on the extent to which the project has fulfilled its objectives. Furthermore, in the project’s context, outcome evaluation will demonstrate the effectiveness of the interventions: risk stratification, ultrasound screening, and venous thromboembolism prophylaxis.
