Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

The Healthcare Program

Hello and welcome to Pentagon Community Healthcare. I’m a nurse at the hospital and a member of the mental health awareness program committee. To begin with, nurses maintain a central role in the care provision processes in the healthcare system. Their position in healthcare provision and their role in healthcare promotion necessitates their involvement in the hospital’s decision-making processes. However, the effectiveness and success of healthcare interventions depend on the collaboration between all cadres involved in care provision. These interdisciplinary teams work in concert in clinical decision-making to ensure the realization of optimal outcomes.

Several healthcare programs have been undertaken by this hospital that fall within the scope of my practice. The most significant one is the mental health awareness program. The incidence of mental health issues has seen a spike in the recent past with significant morbidity and mortality. About one in every five adults lives with a certain form of mental illness in the U.S. alone. This trend is alarming and warrants the establishment of health promotion interventions targeted at curtailing this spike (Jadhakhan et al., 2019). Mental health promotional programs are costly. The budget estimate for the program is about 28 million dollars per year. This program has realized significant benefits to several individuals and societies affected by mental illnesses. Since its inception, the program has enabled hundreds of persons to be enrolled in care provision centres. The hospital has also collaborated with other organizations in screening for various mental disorders. Through the welfare fund established under this program, outreach programs to societies with a heavy burden of mental disorders.

Target Population

The target population for this mental health awareness program is university students and drug and substance abuse addicts. The program has been rolled out across various societies in Akron, Ohio. There are discussions about expanding the program to other neighbourhoods, such as Cleveland. The program has also targeted vulnerable groups such as the homeless and persons suffering from chronic conditions. The objective remains to protect them from suffering attributable to mental disorders.

The Role of Nurses in Providing Input for the Design of This Healthcare Program

Nurses have been pivotal both in the design and implementation of this program. During the design of the program, they played a significant role in defining the objectives of the program. They also defined each role and aided in establishing a workable framework required in the implementation phase. They have equally maintained a unique role in implementing the program. Their roles in patient handling, health promotion activities, patient management, and participation in the clinical decision-making process have enabled the realization of success.

My Role

Nurses have a diverse role as health advocates for mental health awareness. As a mental health awareness advocate, my role is to develop innovative ways that may enable the organization to achieve its goals for the target population. I also provide my nursing management and professional skills in the decision-making processes of the healthcare program. The decision-making process on mental health awareness program design is a critical step that requires the collaboration of all healthcare providers. Nurses’ input in the design process is necessary. As a nurse, my inputs were adopted in the design process for the program outlined. I was able to give the nursing perspective of care that was pivotal in the development of a workable framework for the program. Additionally, I participated in defining the roles and responsibilities of each cadre of healthcare provision that enrolled in the program.

The Role of Nurses in Healthcare Program Implementation

The implementation process of the mental health awareness program draws input from all caregivers. In the implementation phase, understanding the roles and responsibilities of each discipline utilized in the program is key. This is to avoid any conflicts that may arise and are attributable to role confusion. Additionally, the proper understanding of roles will enhance work efficiency and effectiveness, maximizing output. Accordingly, nurses play a significant role in health promotional activities and patient handling. Mental health disorders require utmost attention due to their implications for human health.

According to D & G, 2022, nurses play a role in promoting the health of susceptible individuals. Through outreach programs, the nursing team has traversed various neighbourhoods to create mental health awareness. During these outreach programs, they have been able to identify vulnerable groups and have enrolled them in care groups targeted at promoting their social welfare. Nurses participating in the implementation process should also understand the rights and safeguards to which their nursing roles are entitled. They should, in this regard, be ready to offer care processes in a manner that shows they respect the rights of their subjects and also abide by the legal provisions of the program.

Nurses have also played a role in the management and handling of patients presenting with various mental health disorders. Nurses support the best interest of their patients and maintain respect for the patient’s families and their communities. In this regard, they have exhibited nursing ethical codes defined in the nursing profession when handling and managing these patients. Additionally, they have appreciated the role of families and communities in the mental well-being of these patients. The nursing profession also requires that nurses offer compassionate care to all those who need it. Psychiatric patients, just like other patients, require compassionate care. The nursing team enrolled in this program has continuously been educated on psychiatric patient handling. Their efforts towards compassionate care have enabled the realization of better patient outcomes, especially in this group of patients.

Nurses’ role in the program design process slightly differs from their roles in the implementation process. Whereas the design process heavily borrows on clinical decision-making and definitions of expected outcomes, the implementation process involves executing the stated plans to achieve specific objectives. Therefore, the design process is a hypothetical process that involves paperwork and the establishment of a framework in which a mental health awareness program will be executed. The nurse in this role will aid in clinical decision-making, predicting expected outcomes, and defining roles and responsibilities. In the implementation step, the nurses will be the executors of the plan. In this step, they are expected to employ their professional skills in management and patient handling to create mental health awareness in the target population, manage and handle patients ethically and alleviate the suffering of those presenting with mental illness.

The Healthcare Team Needed To Implement the Designed Program

The implementation of healthcare programs requires a multidisciplinary approach for success. Nurses, doctors, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, and paramedics, among others, may be necessary for the successful rollout of any health program. Healthcare programs on mental health and wellness significantly utilize nurses, doctors, social workers, pharmacists, and clinical psychologists. These disciplines work in concert to develop an effective treatment plan for individuals presenting with various mental illnesses.

Nurses’ role in healthcare teams involves addressing the physical needs of the patients, treating the health conditions these patients present with, and aiding in illness prevention. On the other hand, clinical psychologists are involved in offering psychotherapy to these patients. Pharmacists help design pharmacotherapeutic plans for patients. Doctors also aid in diagnosing and establishing a preventive plan for the patients.

In conclusion, nurses play a significant role in the design and implementation of mental health awareness programs. Their roles in design require the utilization of their professional management skills. However, their role in implementation utilizes their expertise and nursing skills as well as the exhibition of nursing ethical codes. As much as nurses play an essential role in program design and implementation, other caregivers in the healthcare team also maintain similar significance in the design and implementation of mental health awareness programs.
