The Culture of Nursing

An essential component of the healthcare system is the culture of nursing, which is defined by a set of shared values, beliefs, and expectations among nurses. Patients’ quality of care is greatly influenced by nurses, who play a vital role in patient care. Hence, healthcare workers, decision-makers, and patients must understand the nursing culture. This essay will discuss the nursing profession’s culture, such as how nurses project it onto their patients and clients and instances in which it contradicts patients’ values and beliefs.

Culture of Nursing

A set of common values, beliefs, and expectations that define the identity and purpose of the nursing profession make up the nursing culture. Nurses prioritize patients’ health and well-being through patient-centered care, empathy, and advocacy (Fortier & Malloy, 2019). They listen carefully, respect their values and beliefs, and incorporate them into the care plan to portray their culture to their patients and clients. Nurses also put patients’ autonomy first and offer emotional support to establish a therapeutic relationship with the patient.

The values and beliefs of patients may occasionally conflict with the nursing culture. While the nursing profession strongly emphasizes patient-centered care and collaborative decision-making, some patients may prefer a more traditional, authoritarian approach to healthcare (Salyers & Zisman-Ilani, 2019). In my practice, I encountered a patient who preferred that her family make all of the decisions for her and refused to participate in her care plan. I got to know the patient’s values and beliefs before working with her family to create a care plan that integrated those preferences while prioritizing the patient’s health and well-being.

Conclusion

The values of care, compassion, and advocacy for patients’ health and well-being form the foundation of the nursing culture. Nurses project this culture onto their patients and clients by emphasizing patient needs, listening intently, and encouraging patient-centered care, empathy, and holistic approaches to health. Conflicts can, however, develop when patient values and beliefs clash with nursing culture, particularly regarding patient autonomy and decision-making. Yet, nurses can collaborate with patients to comprehend their values and preferences and create care plans that respect their autonomy while prioritizing their health and well-being.
