Regression analysis is a statistical method for determining how a dependent variable and one or more independent variables relate (Shetty et al., 2020). In this case, the person’s IQ would be the dependent variable, and the IQ of their mother would be the independent variable. The first step would be to make a scatter diagram of the data, with the IQ of each person on the x-axis and the IQ of their mothers on the y-axis. This would let us see how the data fit together as a whole and find any outliers. The next step would be fitting the data into a linear regression model. To do this, one would have to determine the equation of the line that fits the data best. The slope of the line would show the strength and direction of the relationship between the two variables. If the slope is positive, it means the relationship is positive, and if it is negative, it means the relationship is negative. When the independent variable is 0, the line’s intercept would show the dependent variable’s expected value.

The coefficient of determination (R-squared) can determine the strength of the relationship. This would tell how much of the change in the dependent variable can be accounted for by the change in the independent variable. A high R-squared value would show a significant correlation between the two variables. A hypothesis test can also be used to determine the relationship’s importance. This means that there is a significant relationship between the two variables. Lastly, a scatter plot with the regression line can visually show how the two variables are related (Shetty et al., 2020). One can also add the equation of the line, the R-squared value, and the p-value to the report to give more information about the results.
