Crime is an act that poses harmful effects on society, and that can be prosecuted and lead to punishment through conviction. In the poem “Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane,” the convicts were imprisoned as a punishment for crimes they committed, with a focus on Hard Rock. Hard Rock was sent to the hospital for Criminal Insane because of his violent behavior in prison. According to the poem, his violence is demonstrated in the statement, “Yeah, remember when he smacked the captain with his dinner tray?” His violent behavior appeared to be aggressive as his jailmates “idolized” his actions and put him on a pedestal. As punishment for his violent behavior, he was locked up in the hole for sixty-seven days. Accordingly, that punishment did not seem severe enough as he was sent to the hospital for the criminally insane.

Hard Rock’s violent behavior affected the captain and his fellow inmates. He beat up the captain and everyone else who provoked him. Furthermore, his hero figure for his inmates would influence the inmates to aspire to behave like him. Consequently, he was sent to the hospital for the criminally insane.

The concept of punishment for his violent behavior was to tame him. Accordingly, in the hospital for the criminally insane, the doctors controlled his violent behavior. Subsequently, he was tamed when he was sent back to prison. In the poem, his behavior change is indicated in the phrase, ” And Hard Rock did nothing. Just grinned and looked silly,” This sentence demonstrates how severe his treatment was. His inmates hoped that he would get back to normal, but eventually, they accepted the reality of their “idol.”In conclusion, different crimes have different punishments. The severity of punishment also varies. Consequently, the punishment set for Hard Rock was unfair and severe because even his behavior was t

ransformed to almost primitivity, even though his crime was not deserving of the severe punishment.
