Summary of argument and findings

Golden and Earp present an analysis of social-ecological approaches, noting that many of the approaches have typically been at the individual levels while ignoring the population levels. To justify their claims, the study adopts a secondary research approach that identifies 157 intervention articles published over the last 20 years. The results of the analysis reveals that while social ecological models have guided public health interventions at the individual and environmental levels. The application of these models have focused on individual and interpersonal characteristics of the population, while largely ignoring the institutional, community and policy factors that affect public health outcomes.

This research is useful for those looking to public health promotion efforts to include advocacy as it suggests a need to explore interventions at the individual levels as well as the population levels to foster successful outcomes. The results inform efforts to modify social and political environments to improve health.
