Role of the Nursing Leader
Nurse leaders are important in hospitals and healthcare departments. Nurse leaders are in charge of their departments. They have various roles ranging from inspiring, mentoring, guiding, and educating their subordinates. They communicate with various stakeholders, budget, train their subordinates, inspire, and act as authority figures. Nurse leaders should inspire their subordinates to follow their lead (Sfantou et al., 2017). They should engage with them to help them solve any departmental problems they have. This will help implement their projects in their departments.
Communication with Stakeholders
Nurse leaders should identify the roles of stakeholders to ensure they effectively communicate with them. Effective communication is critical in building a trustworthy relationship and collaborative partnership with the stakeholders (Chichirez & Purcărea, 2018). The nurse leader must understand what stakeholders need to ensure the project is successfully implemented. By knowing the needs of the various stakeholders, nurse leaders will address their concerns and implement a solution that will benefit all the stakeholders in the project.
The project is to have formal staffing that assigns skilled nurses to patients, which will improve the quality of care that patients receive. The other proposals in the project are reducing nurses’ turnover rates by minimizing mandatory overtime, delegation, competitive compensation, and the use of technology. Finally, the project proposes to set up a committee to implement staffing and scheduling procedures. A nurse leader should take a step back and assess the nurses’ turnover rates. He should then communicate the pros and cons of these proposals to the various stakeholders. He should be open to feedback and any suggestions from the stakeholders. The stakeholders will include the finance department, HR department, senior management, and nurses. Hearing the stakeholders’ concerns and implementing their feedback will contribute to the project’s success.
Nurse Leader and Training
Nurse leaders have an important role in training the various stakeholders who are critical in implementing the project. When training nurses on the new staffing plans, schedules, and software, the nurse leader must understand their literacy levels and how much they understand the importance of the project. If the nursing staff fails to understand the benefits of this project, it will fail. When implementing a change, the nurse leader must understand the starting point of their subordinates. This will help the leader to understand the training needs and levels. The nurse leader must anticipate any questions and challenges during training and forecast solutions to these challenges.
In this project, the nurse must assess the needs of their nursing staff and conduct the training to improve their confidence and competence. The nurse leader should ask the nurses if they understand the benefits of proper staffing and the dangers of nurses’ turnover rates on healthcare outcomes. In-service training improves healthcare outcomes (Chaghari et al., 2017). The nurse leader should take time to explain all the details of the project to the staff members.
Nurse leader and budget
The nurse leader has an important role in budgeting. By participating in budgeting, they will be able to influence the success of the project. The nurse must ensure that the project expenses fall within the outlined project budget during the project planning. The nurse leader should explain the financial expectations to the nurses in terms of hiring new staff. The nurse leader must collaborate with the human resources department to ensure staffing costs are within the project budget. A nurse leader should prepare for any changes in the staffing needs without accruing mandatory overtime, which this project is trying to minimize. The nurse will also collaborate with the nursing team to complete their duties within the set budget. The nurse leader should also negotiate with senior management to get a budget that will help implement the proposed project (Walsh, 2016).
Nurse Leader and Authority
A nurse leader is responsible for the daily operations of his department. The primary roles of nurse leaders include hiring, firing, training, staff development, resource management, patient safety, financial management, and risk management (Doucette, 2017). A nurse leader should be an authority figure and ensure all the department’s objectives are achieved. The nurse manager should demand that all his subordinates adhere to organizational policies. During the implementation of this project, the nurse leader should be easily approachable to ensure that he captures the needs and expe
