There are many methods to self-care that I choose to practice as part of my daily routine. The best way to describe my approach is to
understand self-actuality by becoming aware of your own mental limits. I continue to think about my state of mind when I am dealing
with others and their situations. I will not intentionally invite stress to my life when dealing with the issues of others. I often focus on
me-time after returning home from a stressful day at work. I come home and play drums for one hour before I engage with my family.
This don’t always work, but It helps me transition with a purpose to other issues that I may be facing when I walk through the door. I
often walk my dog, or go to the fitness center. I’m not ashamed to use or ask trusted professional for clarification when I am having
some personal difficulties.
The most important person in the world is me, you, and everybody else in that order. It is often seen or heard as a selfish demeanor,
but is a blatant statement that is the natural truth. It’s the key reminder to self-care in its simplest form. Much emphasis is placed on
self-care as a professional mental health care provider when surrounded by the unforeseen mental conditions of patients that is being
served. Sometimes we fail in our approach to help others without taking the necessary care of ourselves. This is the last Idea of the
aspirational virtues within ethical standards that clinician must come to terms with while practicing the highest ethical standards of
their profession. I can’t care for you, unless I take care of myself.
There is numerous risk associated to not practicing self-care. For many psychologists who focus mainly on trauma survivors, they can
develop an emotional outbreak from their clients’ life experiences. It is seriously important to be aware of the possible interpersonal
and situational factors that may expose practitioners to personal endangerment (Chard, 2005).
