Topic 4 DQ2: Explore the divisions of APA (http://www.apa.org/about/division/). Which would you join? How would you use those divisions to continue your education/training in the field of psychology? Are there other ways to gain expertise in a psychological emphasis (i.e., forensic, development)? Explain.
There are limitless ways to gain expertise in various psychological emphasis. There is a great deal of
psychologists who toil at job task that encompass an administrative role within government funded agencies,
college universities, mental health clinics/hospitals etc. I believe this path is often travel by the multitude of
inspired, ambitious, new academic scholars who sometime believe that this is the only way to go. I found out a
long time ago after working very close to mental health providers, psychologists need to be creative in their
approach to becoming a marketable an effective professional. Psychologist have tens-of-thousands pathways
that they could take and find comfort in their choices.
Out of the 54/56 divisions that was presented, I found myself looking back on the more simpler things that lead
me to pursue the structure of psychology in the first place. My own personal goals include more education in
clinical psychology and to practice as a competent professional. A doctorate degree will further my
development in psychology, along with the many resources within the 56 divisions. I have an interest in
becoming an active member of: (12) Society of Clinical Psychology, (17) Society of Counseling Psychology,
(19) Society of Military Psychology, (38) Society of Health Psychology, (28) Psychopharmacology and
Substance Abuse, (52) International Psychology, and (55) American Society for the Advancement of
Pharmacotherapy (American Psychological Association, 2017). These divisions can offer a great deal of insight,
resources that can guide a perspective psychologist. Societies can also present up and coming seminars
throughout the country. Being an active member to these societies, is a good way to network with others who
shares the same interest.
