Resource Management in Primary Care- Emergency Department
Essentially, resource management in primary care refers to the efficient use of resources, such as staff, equipment, and materials, to provide high-quality healthcare to patients. The purpose of this paper is to discuss two health conditions that may impact the revenue of a healthcare setting and how these conditions may cause changes in the roles of APNs. The care setting for this assignment would be the emergency department. Notably, the selected topics include air embolism and foreign body retention after surgery.
Air embolism is a condition in which air or gas enters the circulation and can block blood flow to vital organs. This condition mainly arises from medical procedures such as endoscopies, venous annulation, and thoracic surgeries. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment (Sampankanpanich Soria, 2022). The cost of treating an air embolism can be high, as it may involve hospitalization, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests. This could affect revenue in the emergency department if the patient cannot pay for the necessary treatment. This is because life-saving services are offered at the emergency department despite patients not having funds for the services.
Conversely, a foreign body retained after surgery is a condition in which a surgical instrument or other object is left inside the patient after a surgical procedure. This can lead to serious complications and may require additional surgery to remove the foreign body (Billroth, 2022). Treating this condition can be expensive, as it may involve hospitalization, additional surgery, and other diagnostic tests. Furthermore, this condition may lead to a medico-legal issue that may cost the department a lot of money. Conclusively, these conditions affect how APRNs provide care, as they may need to prioritize the treatment of foreign body retention and air embolism, regardless of their specialty, over other conditions to ensure the patient’s safety.
