Hills Like White Elephants Setting Analysis

The setting of the story is in Spain, in an unknown railway station. The setting’s description can tell the reader that the countryside has features such as hills, plantations, and rivers. However, I don’t feel there would be any effect on me as the reader if the story took place in another location, say, the United States. This is because nothing unique could have changed if the story occurred in a different area. There is nothing unusual in the story about that location. Hills can be found anywhere, and also the river, trees, and plantations are described. I feel the main idea behind the location in the story was the countryside. The author wanted this story to happen in a countryside setting, and therefore, thus Europe/ Spain was just but a coincidence. Do you need help with your assignment ? By the events happening at the train station showed that the two characters were on a journey. Also, the train station allows them to have ample time to discuss their issues. I feel it would be different if the train station were in a busy town. The girls would be prohibited from walking and discussing their matters freely, given that the space would be small and the people population would be high. The landscape shows that the characters are on a journey, and no people live around the train station.

The characters seem to be traveling to Madrid from Barcelona. They seem to be boyfriend and girlfriend, and they have been having relationship issues currently. Besides, there seems to be a misunderstanding between the two, although the man wants them to be the most affected. It looks like their relationship had come to an end, or there were some benefits they could not get from that relationship anymore. However, they seem to agree about their destination, which is why the woman allows the man to take the bag to the train station upon hearing that it is almost approaching.
