What is the Difference between Infiltration and Extravasation?
Infiltration and extravasation are terms that describe the leaking of medicine or
intravenous solutions into tissues or skin in the case of IV insertion in the latter. Both are as a
result of IV catheter coming off or leakage in the vein. The difference between the two is in the
fluid or medicine type that leaks. Infiltration often do not cause any harm but rather, discomfort,
swelling, and redness can result in the site. Extravasation is often serious as the leaked solution
or medicine can result in damage to the tissue or skin. The damage caused by an extravasation
can cause a painful sore or ulcer to develop that requires immediate treatment (Doellman et al.,
2009).
