What is the main issue for your organization in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice? Discuss what might be the first step in addressing and resolving this issue.
Achieving Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing
Various factors impede the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing. Firstly, organizational factors can affect the realization of EBP. Examples of these factors include nursing shortages and inadequate financial resources. Nursing shortages are associated with an increased workload, an overwhelmed workforce, burnout, fatigue, and demoralization (Alqahtani et al., 2022). As such, the implementation of EBP is affected. Inadequate financial resources impede the implementation of EBP, which entails the acquisition of new equipment, technology, and training of nurses (McArthur et al., 2021). Secondly, nurse-related factors include a lack of motivation and limited skills and knowledge (Alqahtani et al., 2022). Limited knowledge and skills imply that nurses cannot implement an EBP effectively. Also, a lack of motivation reduces nurses’ commitment to EBP.
Nurse-related factors can be addressed by providing periodic training, performance appraisal, and use of reward systems. Training will equip nurses with the skills needed to implement EBP (McArthur et al., 2021). Reward systems will boost their morale and commitment to EBP. On the other hand, organizational factors can be addressed by optimizing the efficiency of human and financial resource management (McArthur et al., 2021). For instance, recruiting more nurses will optimize nurse-to-patient ratios and increase the success of EBP (McArthur et al., 2021).
