Why the Correct Methods for Administering Medication Are Called the Five Rights

Nurses and other healthcare workers are taught the “Five Rights,” also known as the “5Rs,” to decrease and prevent medication errors (Kim & De Jesus, 2022). These rights of medication administration are called the “Five Rights” since they are five rights that outline the principles of medication administration. The “Five Rights” include the right drug, the right patient, the right dose, the right time, and the right route (Hanson & Haddad, 2022). The principle of the right drug encourages nurses to check a drug and its labels before administration. In contrast, the principle of the right person requires the nurse to confirm that the name on the label matches the patient. Nurses are guided by the principle of the right route to double-check the route of administration on the label before administering a drug. The principle of right time requires nurses to administer drugs at the exact required time, while the principle of the right dose guides the nurse to double-check the dose on the label before administering a drug.
