Telehealth technology can be used in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. This technology embraces remote patient monitoring, mobile health, store and forward, and videoconferencing (Andrews et al., 2020; Bitar & Alismail, 2021). Telehealth technology enables the interdisciplinary team to collaborate effectively and to provide patient-centered healthcare. Telehealth improves access to health care by allowing patients to be managed remotely (Hatcher-Martin et al., 2021). I am interested in telehealth technology because it improves workflow, patient safety, and the quality of healthcare. Workflow is improved by eliminating the necessity for in-person visits and creating flexible access to care (Hatcher-Martin et al., 2021). Patient safety is optimized because telehealth allows timely access to care, timely initiation of healthcare interventions, and periodic patient monitoring (Hatcher-Martin et al., 2021). I believe that all healthcare facilities should embrace telehealth technology in their routine.
I used peer-reviewed articles to provide comprehensive evidence for my research. I sourced these peer-reviewed journal articles from online databases. Notably, I used PubMed and Google Scholar. The CRAAP (currency, relevance, accuracy, authority, and purpose) model enabled me to ascertain the credibility of the peer-reviewed articles (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). Regarding currency, I selected articles published within the past five years. Regarding relevance and purpose, I selected articles whose themes and goals are harmonious with the chosen topic. Next, concerning authority, I checked for the authors’ affiliations and the relevance of their professions to the chosen topic (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). The online databases allowed me to use key search terms. I used search terms such as “telehealth,” “patient safety,” and “healthcare.”

The authors conducted a literature review of articles published in various online databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed. The authors report that the highest percentage of patients and healthcare practitioners are content with telehealth technologies. This is demonstrated by levels of contentment that exceed eighty percent. A variety of circumstances causes the satisfaction levels. Firstly, telehealth enabled patients to access continuous virtual healthcare. As a result, it reduced the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission, which would have been enhanced by overcrowding due to in-person visits. Also, telemedicine increased accessibility to healthcare by eliminating physical barriers and allowing connectivity to patients found in remote areas. Thirdly, telemedicine allows healthcare providers to monitor patients with long-term illnesses continuously. Remote patient monitoring was realized through the use of wearable devices. As such, telehealth improved the quality of care and patient safety.
This article is relevant for healthcare providers. It explores the impact of telehealth technology in other healthcare settings and its impact on patients and healthcare providers. This information can enable healthcare providers to make informed decisions when implementing health technology to optimize the quality of care in institutions. The rationale for developing this annotated bibliography was to review how the advancements in healthcare-related technologies in the face of a pandemic crisis, the need to improve patient monitoring, and the delivery of collaborative care in rural areas have changed how healthcare is delivered to where it is needed. I found that telehealth is a healthcare technology that has become essential in nursing and healthcare settings, creating this shift in patient care delivery. This annotated bibliography reviews available evidence on the application of telehealth in nursing and healthcare, its impacts on provider and patient satisfaction, accessibility of healthcare services even in remote areas, and barriers and opportunities for the implementation of telehealth in both rural and urban care settings. I searched online databases such as the Wiley online library, PubMed Central, and Science Direct for full peer-reviewed articles. I also used Google Scholar and Mendeley search engines utilizing search terms and phrases such as “Telehealth,” “impacts of telehealth,” “telehealth adoption factors,” and “telehealth in rural and urban healthcare.”

This article is an integrative review of available evidence on the satisfaction of patients and healthcare providers with the use of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors note that events and situations related to the emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the safety measures and other measures taken to control the spread of the virus, including quarantine, lockdowns, and social distancing, impacted how healthcare was delivered. People under quarantine with acute and chronic health issues still needed medical attention. This created a necessity for the method to continue with the delivery of healthcare services throughout the pandemic, leading to the increased use of telehealth. The integrative review of current evidence from 23 peer-reviewed articles found that the increased adoption and use of telehealth in health care services was driven by the necessity to overcome the barriers created by the pandemic. Telehealth presents an opportunity for nurses and patients to continually deliver and access healthcare services, supporting the continuity of care irrespective of existing barriers. As per the author’s conclusions, patients and providers, in general, have increased satisfaction with the use of telehealth in unprecedented times, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a majority are willing to continue with the use of telehealth services in the future. This integrative review is important to nursing practice and general healthcare practice as it provides empirical evidence of how the use of telehealth services can improve the levels of patient and provider interaction and satisfaction. It also creates these outcomes using telehealth as a basis for the adoption of telehealth in healthcare.
