Topic 5 DQ1: Discuss why it is important to maintain professional boundaries when working within the field of psychology?

Practicing boundaries help us to manage ourselves and our personal emotions. Maintaining professional
boundaries are vital in behavioral health work. Psychologists are working on a deep and profound level of their
client’s emotions, which make them vulnerable to their uncensored inner thoughts. This also means that
psychologists have a responsibility to do things to the best of their ability and to ensure that the type of help and
support they are administering, does not damage or disenfranchise them. Psychologists working with clients
who present some difficult issues can also be very stressful and draining work (Cooper, 2012).

maintaining and managing your professional boundaries. London: Jessica Kingsley.
