Description of the Assignment The following is a valuation of Amazon, Inc. for the purposes of the sale of a minority stake of the company. In this valuation you will find a summary of the financial health, future performance, and an estimated value of the business

6

Customers

Amazon's customer base ranges from the everyday individual to major corporations.

Amazon is that place for anyone looking for that hard-to-find items or everyday items. It

provides consumers with a place to purchase products, but it is also a place for third-party sellers

to sell products to consumers they may not have reached had it not been for Amazon.

Along with being an eCommerce website, Amazon offers subscription services as well. Its most

significant subscription service offered is Amazon Prime. It was reported by eMarketer in 2020

that " by the end of 2021, there will be 148.6 million Amazon Prime users, up from 142.5 users

in 2020." (Anthony, 2022)

Beyond Prime and its subscription services, Amazon offers other services, such as; Amazon

Web Services (AWS). "Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world's most comprehensive and

broadly adopted cloud platform, offering over 200 fully featured services from data centers

globally." (US About Amazon., 2020) "With top brands like AOL, Reddit, Netflix, and Pinterest

now running on the Amazon Web Services (AWS), the future looks bright for Amazon cloud

services." (Anthony, 2022), and with its purchase of Whole Foods Market, Amazon now has

physical stores.

Management

Amazon operates under a hierarchical organizational structure due to the immense

size of the business. The "Senior management team include three CEOs and three senior vice

presidents responsible for various vital aspects of the business reporting directly to CEO Andy

Jassy." (Dudovskiy, Amazon organizational structure: A brief overview - research

Interview Summary

Shelley, a nursing supervisor at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Huntington, kindly agreed to participate in this interview. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Huntington is an acute care rehabilitation facility specializing in neurological, orthopedic, stroke, and spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Shelley, a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, has been employed at Encompass for five years, serving as a nursing supervisor for the past three years. In her role, Shelley directs staff, supports challenging situations, and implements urgent rules and procedures. She also monitors patients, collaborates with physicians, educates the nursing staff, and provides floor support.

During the interview, Shelley highlighted several issues at Encompass Health. The increased nursing turnover rate and staff absences have led to higher nurse-to-patient ratios, adversely affecting patient care. Shelley noted that a few years ago, the nurse-to-patient ratio was seven patients per nurse. However, management has since increased this ratio to reduce expenses. According to Shelley, this rise in the nurse-to-patient ratio has made it difficult to retain nursing staff, thus increasing turnover rates. She has communicated to the chief nursing officer that reducing the nurse-to-patient ratio would help lower the turnover rate.

Issue Identification

Shelley identified persistent issues regarding nurse-to-patient ratios and insufficient support from ancillary workers and management. At Encompass, nurses generally manage a patient load of eight to nine, sometimes ten. About nine months ago, management adjusted the nurse-to-patient ratio to a maximum of eight patients per nurse, which initially improved morale and retained several nurses. However, this improvement was short-lived as management gradually increased the ratio to nine patients due to rising absences and staff departures.

The high staff turnover rate places additional strain on remaining employees and diminishes patient care quality. Furthermore, the lack of staff cooperation and communication has led to increased patient complaints and errors in treatment (Asirifi et al., 2022). Research indicates that higher staffing levels are associated with lower rates of mortality, prescription errors, ulcers, restraint use, infections, and pneumonia (Driscoll et al., 2018).

To address the high turnover rate and its impact on patient care, an interdisciplinary team could develop a strategy. This team could also devise plans to improve teamwork and communication among staff. By employing an interdisciplinary approach, the team could create comprehensive plans that address the root causes of the issues and are tailored to the specific needs of the medical-surgical unit.

Change Theories That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution

The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, and nearly two-thirds of change initiatives fail due to factors such as poor planning, lack of motivation, ineffective communication, or extensive changes. This is a significant challenge in healthcare. All healthcare professionals, from the boardroom to the bedside, are involved in facilitating successful change. Utilizing best practices from change theories can increase the likelihood of successful outcomes and improvements in practice (Barrow et al., 2022).

The high staff turnover rate affects the quality of patient care, placing pressure on staff to deliver high-quality care despite a shortage of nurses. To address this issue, an interdisciplinary team could collaborate to develop a plan. The team could also create strategies to enhance staff collaboration and communication. By using an interdisciplinary approach, the team could devise comprehensive strategies that address the underlying issues and cater to the specific needs of the facility.

Although each change theory has its distinct features, their similarities can provide best practices for effective change management. For addressing nursing turnover, Lippitt’s change theory may be particularly suitable. Building on Lewin’s original theory, Lippitt’s Phases of Change Theory involves increasing awareness of the need for change, establishing a relationship between the system and the change agent, defining the problem, setting goals and action plans, implementing the change, gaining staff acceptance, stabilizing, and redefining the change agent’s relationship with the system (Barrow et al., 2022).

INITIAL LEADERSHIP REFLECTION AND EXPECTATION SUBJECT CODE: LB5241 SUBJECT TITLE: LEADERSHIP FUTURES

Introduction Leadership is an important factor that defines the future of societies, businesses and numerous fields of organizational activity. It involves leading people and organizations towards a specific purpose using persuasion, inspiration and direction (Schedlitzki & Edwards, 2018). Historically, there have been changes in the concept of leadership where it has evolved from being synonymous with military might to the complex and evolving leadership today. The Great Man Theory, Trait Theory and Transformational Leadership theories provide insights into how different characteristics and behaviors enhance leadership (Chou, 2015). For instance, the Great Man Theory of the 19th century postulated that leaders possess inherent traits that make them apt for leadership (Benmira & Agboola, 2021). Pertaining to this point, theories such as the Transformational Leadership theory have explained that a leader should be able to motivate his/her followers beyond expectations (‘Transformational leadership,’ 2023). This paper aims at clarifying the concept of leadership in relation to the individual Leadership experience and expectations within the context of this module. Initial Reflections and Expectations In my high school, I was elected as the captain of the soccer team and being given the responsibility of leading the school project then. As a soccer team leader, I learned important lessons about encouragement and morale. In the school project, I had to lead a group comprising several members in the delegation of tasks and in decision-making and that made me realize how crucial these aspects are for a leader. My perception of leadership then was immature. Leadership is important not only in the business context; it is also significant in regulating family matters, implementing educational programs and interacting with the community (Sutherland et al., 2022). In the business context, responsible leadership that refers to values, accountability, and long-term orientations is very important (Chemers, 2014

How might discrimination in the workplace influence the resolution of the crisis of generativity versus stagnation? Additionally, tied in the article Structural racism as a fundamental driver of Health Disparities

Discrimination at work can significantly impact an individual’s developmental themes in adulthood, as it intersects with various aspects of personal growth and well-being. The developmental themes of adulthood, often explored within developmental psychology, include factors such as identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity, as outlined in Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development and further elaborated upon by other theorists. Unemployment, underemployment, and a hostile work environment can significantly negatively impact a person’s ability to progress on the developmental tasks of middle adulthood. These tasks are related to career, family, and personal growth (Newman & Newman, 2017).

Fecal Transplants- Mechanisms Benefits and Potential Impacts on Health Issues Fecal Transplants

A fecal transplant involves transplanting fecal matter from a healthy human donor to the recipient’s body to help grow healthful bacteria that can treat some conditions (Choi & Cho, 2016). The human gut has multiple bacteria, and when there is an imbalance in these bacteria, an individual can develop intestinal problems and diarrhea. The antibiotics used to treat gut infections can also kill helpful bacteria.
